The second wave of distance education brought about an increase in published advances in distance education worldwide. The advent of open and single-mode universities, created for distance education, brought about new approaches to teaching and learning and the role of student and teacher. Andragogy is defined in the Merriman-Webster Dictionary as “the art or science of teaching adults.” Championed by Malcolm Knowles, andragogy is based on specific characteristics of adult learning that are different from child learning, according to Knowles (2005). Knowles (2005) contends that adults are self-directed and that focus should be on the “process of learning and not the content.” How has andragogy informed distance education and is it still relevant today to course design, warrants further research.
